LT Power Capacitors

LT Power Capacitors

Low Tension (LT) power capacitors are electrical devices used in low-voltage systems (typically 230V to 690V) to improve the power factor by providing reactive power. By reducing the reactive current drawn from the grid, these capacitors help industries and commercial facilities lower their energy bills, minimize system losses, and stabilize voltage levels.

Why are Power Capactiors so important?

Low Tension (LT) power capacitors are essential components in electrical systems because they significantly improve energy efficiency, enhance power quality, and reduce electricity costs. They primarily correct the low power factor caused by inductive loads like motors and transformers, acting as local reactive power generators to reduce the demand on the power grid. By improving the power factor, these capacitors eliminate or drastically reduce the financial penalties imposed by utility companies for low power factor (high kVAR demand).

Key Technical Features of LT Power Capacitors

  • Low Losses: Modern LT capacitors are highly efficient, with dielectric losses often less than 0.2 W/kVAr, minimizing heat generation.
  • Overpressure Disconnector: A crucial safety mechanism that disconnects the capacitor from the power supply if an internal fault creates excessive gas, preventing explosion.
  • Discharge Resistors: Internal resistors are mandatory, designed to reduce the residual voltage to 50V or less within one minute of switching off to ensure safety during maintenance.
  • Harmonic Withstand Capability: Capacitors are designed to handle non-linear loads, with ratings ranging from Standard Duty (up to 10% THD) to Super Heavy Duty (up to 25% or more THD).
